Origin of the Word Thursday
The name is derived from Thor, the Germanic god of thunder. Thor equates to the Roman god Jupiter. So, the day of the week between Wednesday and Friday is named after the god of thunder. In the Romance languages, the names come from Jupiter.
In Chinese and Slavic languages, the day’s name comes from a derivation of “fourth,” as in the fourth day of the week. While the Greek and Portuguese designate the name “fifth day.” The Portuguese’s Quinta-Feira means literally “fifth day.”
