Thank you, NFSC Nurses For Sustainable Care! You're absolutely right-these questions need to be asked everywhere nurses are present. It’s time we shift the narrative from "support roles" to "strategic partners." Nurses aren’t just caregivers; we are innovators and decision-makers, capable of reshaping healthcare from the bedside to the boardroom. The more we ask, the more we challenge, the closer we get to making nursing an integral part of organizational strategy. Together, let’s continue pushing boundaries and transforming healthcare.

🚨 𝐃𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬’ 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐰 & 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠? 🚨It’s time for an overdue conversation.Too often, nursing is viewed through a narrow lens at the boardroom level, where outdated norms still dominate decision-making. Many healthcare boards continue to sideline nurses, despite our critical role in patient care, operational success, and healthcare innovation. This disconnect limits the full potential of nursing, not just in leadership but in transforming health outcomes.🤔 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:How often does your organization’s board actively listen to and engage with its nursing leaders? Are nurses seen as strategic partners, or are they simply 'afterthought' leaders who get their voices heard only occasionally? Here’s the reality – boards need nursing's expertise to thrive in today's complex healthcare landscape. The profession is no longer just about caregiving; it’s about clinical judgment, data-driven insights, and policy advocacy that shape the future of healthcare. Yet, we still find systemic barriers that undervalue the profound contributions nurses bring to the table.💡 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭: Reframe the Narrative Instead of being passive observers, let’s ask more direct questions at every level. “Why isn’t nursing seen as central to the board’s strategy?”This small shift in conversation can spark bigger changes. Boards that embrace nursing perspectives report better patient outcomes, improved organizational efficiency, and more innovative solutions to healthcare challenges.🔍 Data Speaks Volumes Emerging research shows that when nurses are involved in executive decisions, the ripple effects are undeniable. But a 2023 analysis of healthcare organizations revealed that only 30% of boards had regular nursing input in strategy sessions. Imagine the potential if that number was flipped.𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: Nurses, be bold and step into these conversations. Whether you’re in leadership or on the frontlines, make your voice heard. Challenge the norms. Ask the tough questions. Advocate for nursing to be seen as a cornerstone of the board’s decision-making process, not just a support role.🔄 𝐀 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐦: By shifting how nursing is viewed at the top, we don’t just change our profession-we change healthcare itself. The future of nursing leadership isn’t just a possibility. It’s a necessity. Let’s empower one another to break down barriers and reshape how nursing is valued, from the bedside to the boardroom.🌟 Let’s Push for a Future Where Nurses Shine BrightlyWe are more than capable of influencing policy, driving innovation, and leading organizations into a brighter, healthier future.𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠?Toward, The Bright Nursing Future ✨#NurseLeadership #NursesOnLinkedIn #FutureOfNursing

In the face of nursing shortages exacerbated by the pandemic, healthcare organizations are increasingly adopting virtual nursing. This innovative model allows nurses to provide care remotely, easing the burden on the workforce and enhancing patient experiences. Early implementations by WellSpan Health, OSF HealthCare, and Texas Children's Hospital show promising results in improving efficiency and reducing patient falls. However, successful adoption requires overcoming challenges in technology integration and workflow management.I recognize the potential of virtual nursing to revolutionize healthcare delivery. In the face of unprecedented shortage of healthcare workers, particularly hospital nursing, there is huge potential in innovating care team structures. RNs at the hospital bedside do 100s of different tasks. Some of these tasks can be taken on by other roles, including some w/o clinical training. This creates efficiencies, since task specialization = efficiency, as with any industry/discipline. It also frees capacity for RNs to focus on the parts of patient care ONLY they can do by the bedsideThere were two great sessions on alternative models I went to at #AONL2024- one by a team at Advocate who has piloted several different flavors of team structure at facilities across the midwest (word choice of "flavor" intentional -they themed their session as a Willy Wonka taste test), and another by nursing leaders from 2 UCHealth hospitals (particularly great to learn about what’s being done near us in Denver)Some structures have existed for a while, for example LPNs/CNAs managing oral medications, wound care, and exercise. Some are newer concepts, such as tech roles (do intake on an iPad, manage certain bedside equipment/monitors), and virtual nursing “sitters” Common themes between the sessions were👉 Granular task breakdown - to manage new roles explicitly taking on tasks previously done by RNs, need to know exactly the full list of things being done and even relative volumes of activity👉COVID as catalysis- both sets of speakers talked about COVID response at their systems showing the value of specialization (and tech to enable it)👉Hiring pipelines- having non-RN roles participating in care as a way to recruit from local community and pave the way for future upskilling as wellAt In-House Health our scheduling/staffing platform supports the rollout and maintenance of updated team models by quantifying the workload and capacity for each role. Especially when hospitals invest in systems like virtual sitters, precisely staffing under new conditions is important to ensure fair schedules and maximize the ROI tooUCHealth Brian West MBA RN CMSRN Kyle HammondAdvocate Health Care Johanna Lemke Laura Rashleger MSN, RN, NE-BC Stephanie Zidek, PhD, RN, AGCNS-BC, NEA-BC, NPD-BC

#virtualnursing in the literature again! "Nursing 3.0" is a care delivery model that improves staff satisfaction and patient satisfaction, decreases length of stay, reduces falls, and improves overall care delivery. It's great to see the data coming out to support the new models of care.
