Standard Console Table Height: 30 inches

Standard Console Table Depth: 14 inches

Standard Console Table Width: 20-72 inches

Console tables can significantly increase any room’s look, feel, and function.

Whether it’s a sofa table behind a couch or an entryway console table, you can use them just about anywhere in your house!

Two of the best things about console tables: they give you an extra place for adorable decor and they can give you some much-needed storage.

There are several things to consider when buying a console table for a room, but one of the most important to figure out is the size. The size of your console table can make or break your space, so you’ll want to ensure it’s perfect.

Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. In this post, I’ll be going over the best console table dimensions for your space, as well as all of the great ways to utilize a console table!

What is a console table used for?

Before we hop into the best console table dimensions and size, it’s only right to know what a console table is used for. So, what is a console table?

Console tables are used for displaying decor, adding extra storage space, or even acting as an accent piece to your room.

They are the perfect spot for showing off your favorite vase, small indoor plants, candles, pictures, and other cute decor!

Console tables are generally a lot more narrow than your average side table. Therefore, they aren’t meant to be super practical for things like dining, seating, or displaying larger items.

Something to consider when looking for the perfect console table is whether you could benefit from some extra storage. If you’re like me, I could always use a little more storage. Whether your console table has cabinets or shelves, it can be a great bonus.

Best Console Table Dimensions

The best console table dimensions are going to be the ones that fit your specific space. With that being said, there are some standard sizes that you can use as a reference when shopping around.

The standard size of a console table is 30 inches tall, 14 inches deep, and 20-72 inches wide.

With each of those guidelines, you can go a few inches in either direction. However, I have several recommendations when it comes to sizing that you’ll want to keep in mind.

  • Console Table Depth: Stick between a 10-15 inch depth. Too narrow and it’s not functional. Too deep and it sticks too far off the wall.
  • Console Table Height: Try not to go any lower than 30 inches when choosing a console table. Short console tables will not look proportional in any room that has at least 8-foot tall ceilings. You might not like how low it is when you stand next to it. Be sure to stay lower than 34 inches or else it’s going to look too tall.
  • Console Table Width: Width is solely dependent on your space and what YOU want – so there is no true standard. If you have a long wall that needs to be filled up, shoot for the stars with a 72-inch wide console table. If you have a small entryway wall, you can go for a 20-inch console table. Just be sure your console table is at least an inch shorter than the width of the wall it’s going on.

I love references, so here you go! This is my console table in my entryway. It is 32 inches tall, 14 inches deep, and 21 inches wide. As you can see, it fits perfectly on this tiny wall in my entryway, and was one of the only options I came across that I really loved!

How Wide Should A Console Table Be?

When thinking about console table dimensions and the best size for your space, console table width is going to be something that might stump you. I’m not going to let that happen!

Console Table On a Long Wall

When you are putting a console table on a long wall with lots of space, the sky’s really the limit in terms of width. It’s recommended that you leave at least 4-6 inches on either side before getting to the wall edge to keep it proportional.

Console Table On a Short Wall

When you are putting a console table on a short wall, you can shorten the 6-inch suggestion to just an inch on either side before getting to the edge of the wall.

You don’t need your console table to take up the entire width of the wall either! Maybe you have a piece of art, a picture, or a mirror you want to put above a small console table. It’s completely up to you how wide you want your console table to be!

If you need help figuring out how high to hang that mirror or picture over your console table, check out the related post below! You’ll want to make sure your console table size and picture/mirror are sized and spaced appropriately to one another.

Console Table Solution For A SUPER Small Wall

It can be difficult to find console tables that are under 20 inches wide to perfectly fit a small wall.

I have the answer: drink tables!

Sizing in at only about 9-12 inches wide, this is the perfect option for those tiny walls that need a console table.

And lucky you, I have an entire post about drink tables, how to use them, and a list of the best ones out there.

What Are The Best Console Table Dimensions For Behind A Couch?

So, back to the sofa table/console table – we need to talk about the dimensions for a sofa table behind a couch.

WIDTH

The best width for a sofa table behind a couch is at least two-thirds the width of the whole sofa. But you can also have your sofa table be the full width of your couch. Just be sure to keep it at least 4-6 inches shorter than your sofa on each end to keep things proportional.

HEIGHT

The best height for a sofa table behind a couch is to have it as tall as the back of your couch or an inch or so shorter. One of the biggest mistakes when placing a console table behind the couch is buying one that is taller than your couch.

A sofa table that is taller than your couch will look out of place. Not to mention you could potentially hit your head when you sit back to relax – talk about a non-relaxing experience. 😉 And to top it off, you don’t want to have to reach toward the moon to place cups while watching TV.

The best depth for a sofa table behind a couch is 10-15 inches deep. This is the perfect depth for keeping it functional without your sofa table sticking out into the room.

How to use a console table in different rooms?

Now that we know all about console table dimensions and the best console table size, let’s quickly look at ways to actually use a console table in different areas of your home!

Entryway

A console table in the entryway is the perfect focal point to greet guests upon entering your home!

One with a storage cabinet could be great for storing items like hats, gloves, and other things you might need. This is perfect for when you make your way out the door.

Decorate it with some simple decor to give your guests a taste of the rest of your house. This could include candle sticks, decor, or small plants.

Living Room

If you’re wondering what a table behind the couch is called, that is in fact a console table! Some people also refer to this as a sofa table.

Placing a console table behind your sofa is an obvious choice for how to utilize it in the living room, but you can also place it under a wall-mounted TV and add small decor to it!

When it’s behind your couch, place picture frames, a lamp, and other decor on it. But if it’s under your TV, keep the decor simple to not distract from the TV.

Bedroom

You can also place a console table in your bedroom. This may not be the first place that comes to mind when placing a console table, however, it can end up looking really good!

A console table would look amazing under a wall-mounted TV or under a blank wall with a mirror placed above it.

The opportunities are truly endless if you have the right space for it!

Dining Room

Placing a console table on a wall you aren’t quite sure what to do with in your dining room, is also a great idea.

This could be an opportunity for you to display your favorite dinnerware or store your serving ware in between uses. You could even use it to showcase your favorite drinks or glassware. A console table could also act as a bar cart if you find the right one.

How many console tables in a room?

I would not exceed more than one console table per room – you do not want to have console table overload.

There is one exception I see working. If you have a large family room, you could have a small-sized console table on one wall, and a console table behind the couch – or vice-versa. You just don’t want the room to be too repetitive.

The goal would be to blend them into the room to where you don’t even realize that they are both console tables.

But for this reason, one console table per room is plenty!

Best Console Tables

Let’s end this post with some of my favorite console tables that are just absolutely stunning! You could not go wrong with any of these. 🙂 Hopefully this gives you a little inspo!
